Lighting Tests

One of the key things about the proposed aesthetics of our film was that we wanted to keep the appearance quite simple, and only use necessary key props and set pieces. This meant doing visual research into the style and details in other productions that use this kind of representation.

These were the images that we identified as our favourite examples of the type of aesthetic we would like.

After looking at these lighting samples, I began to look at the use of a strong spotlight on a very dark stage, and see what effect the use of different coloured lights had on the atmosphere and mood of a simple image. For this I created a simple cube in Maya, with a group plane and then used different coloured spotlights to test different styles.

1) Pure white spotlights

2) Pale pink spotlights

3) Pale pink spotlights 2

4) Green spotlights

5) Yellow spotlights

6) Red Spotlights

7) Pale Yellow Spotlights

8) Mixed Spotlights 1

9) Mixed Spotlights 2

10) Triple Spotlights

As a group we decided that the lighting style we liked best were the pale yellow (#7) and white (#1) spotlights. We decided that these ultimately were the most effective and accurate aesthetic, and the lighting style we would like to move forward with. These tests were a really useful way of practising and testing how different experiments come out when rendered through Maya. Once we have the final designs for the stage and other set elements, I will set the lighting for the scenes up like this in Maya.
