Silent Communication reference for animation

We began to look at how companies and individuals in the past had effectively communicated moods and conversations without using audio, as this is one of the restrictions for this film. We are allowed a sound track and special effects, however we have to avoid a Voice Over being used. For this reason we began to look at two different avenues for reference; ballet and silent era movies.

Ballet Communication

This is a video that shows a humorous use of Ballet mime to communicate some silly conversations, however it gives you a good idea of how traditional arm movements are used in Ballet to convey feeling.

This is from the English National Ballet's production of Alice in Wonderland. This is the dance between the Queen of Hearts and her cards while they are trying to avoid getting their heads chopped off. This again portrays her emotion and growing frustration without any use of speech, so will be a good piece of reference for us to move forward with.

This is another dance from the same production between the Mad Hatter, March Hare, Doormouse and Alice. This is more useful in terms of seeing how you can built characters through use of different styles of movement with the same dance moves. Each character has their own individual style of movement which aids in the character performance.

Silent Movie action
Charlie Chaplin was arguably the king of the silent comedy. Below are just a few examples. You can see how he uses exaggerated versions of well know gestures and body language movements in order to build comedy with the use of small amounts of the rediculous.
